The Samaria Gorge is 16 kilometers long, starts from the altitude of 1250 meters in Omalos Village and reaches down the shore of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. The distance you will walk in the National Park of Samaria is 13 km, but you will need to walk another 3 km from the extit of the Park to Agia Roumeli Village.
The very narrow passage near the end of the gorge is called the “iron gate”. Nobody knows where it got the name from.
Samaria is the longest gorge of the whole Europe and one of the longest gorges in the world! Samaria Gorge National Park is located in the White Mountains in western Crete.
