Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake in Crete. Lake Kournas in ancient times was known as Korisia, but later took its current name from the Arabic word for lake.
Located in a beautiful location in a hollow between two hills, about 4km away from Georgioupolis in Chania (western Crete).
Lake Kournas is relatively small with a maximum length of 1087 meters and a width of 880 meters. Covering an area of 579 acres and is generally shallow with a maximum depth of 22.5 meters and is situated 20 meters above sea level.
